It can feel like a lot.

So what does a GI-MAP result actually show?

A GI-MAP report is essentially a data-rich snapshot of selected aspects of your gastrointestinal environment.

It doesn't give you one overall "gut health score."

Instead, it breaks your results into different sections so you can see what was detected, how the findings compare with the laboratory's reference ranges, and which areas may deserve further attention.

Let's break it down.

First: What Is Being Measured?

The GI-MAP uses quantitative PCR, or qPCR, to look for genetic material from specific microorganisms.

Your report can include multiple categories, such as:

The result isn't simply a list of "good" and "bad" organisms.

The report isn't only looking for microorganisms.

It also includes markers related to different aspects of the gastrointestinal environment.

Depending on the report, these may include markers associated with:

These markers can add context that a microorganism-only report wouldn't provide.

What Does an "Abnormal" Result Mean?

This is probably the most important question.

An abnormal or elevated result doesn't automatically mean:

"We found the cause."

It means that something was detected outside the laboratory's established reference range or expected threshold.

The next question is:

"Does this finding actually matter for this person?"

That requires context.

For example, a finding may be more meaningful when it lines up with a person's symptoms, health history, and other results.

Why You Shouldn't Diagnose Yourself From a GI-MAP

It's easy to search the internet for every organism on your report.

But this can quickly become overwhelming and potentially misleading.

You might see a microorganism you've never heard of and assume you need to eliminate it immediately.

That's not how these results should be interpreted.

The GI-MAP is designed to provide information.

It does not replace a clinical assessment.

What If Everything Is "In Range"?

A report where everything falls within the laboratory's reference ranges doesn't necessarily mean there is nothing worth discussing.

Your symptoms still matter.

If you're experiencing ongoing bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or other digestive issues, a normal result doesn't invalidate what you're experiencing.

It may simply mean that the particular markers tested did not identify an obvious abnormality.

That's useful information too.

What Should You Actually Look For?

Don't start by looking for the biggest number.

Instead, look at the report as a whole.

Consider:

What was detected?

What was not detected?

Which results fall outside the laboratory's reference ranges?

Do any findings match your symptoms or health history?

Are there patterns across multiple sections?

These questions are much more useful than trying to identify one "bad" result.

Your GI-MAP Is a Starting Point—Not the Finish Line

A GI-MAP can provide a lot of information.

But the value isn't in simply having a report with pages of numbers.

The value comes from understanding what those findings may mean for you.
